National AI laboratory to be established in Iran

The secretary of Iran’s Artificial Intelligence, Laser, and Quantum Committee has announced the launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in the country to tackle critical issues affecting daily life, such as energy imbalance and air pollution.
Behrooz Minaei said the laboratory will be stablished by a consortium of academic, laboratory, and private sector experts, the Center for Communications and Information of the Iranian Vice Presidency for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-Based Economy reported.
Minaei highlighted the importance of shifting towards clean energy, stating that collaboration with the Development Headquarters for Knowledge-Based Economy, Water, Energy, and Environment will be pivotal.
He also highlighted the plan to create a smart city pilot project in southern Iranian island of Qeshm, in partnership with Free Zone authorities, to demonstrate AI applications in urban management.
The smart city will integrate data on transportation, energy consumption, commerce, and entertainment into dedicated data centers.
Qeshm is strategically located at the Strait of Hormuz where a quarter of the world’s oil passes.
Minaei mentioned that BRICS countries, including South Africa, China, and Russia, will support the smart city initiative.
Plans to initiate the smart city development are expected to commence within months, contingent upon securing the necessary funding.
