Iran recognized as pioneer in assistive tech at global UNICEF-WHO summit

Iran’s model for developing assistive technologies was spotlighted at the GATE-2025 summit, jointly organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. Representatives from Iran’s Vice Presidency for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-Based Economy participated in the event, presenting the country’s efforts as a successful model for developing nations.

Mostafa Ghanei, Secretary of the Biotechnology, Health, and Medical Technologies Headquarters, outlined Iran’s initiatives in assistive technology, based on WHO’s 5P framework, which includes policy-making, production, and access. He also emphasized the integration of digital solutions, noting successful applications in technologies for the visually impaired.

Fernando Botelho, UNICEF’s Assistive Technology Program Specialist, praised Iran’s achievements, stating that the Iranian model could serve as an inspiration for other developing countries.

Iran’s collaboration with UNICEF began in 2019 and has since included two innovation challenges focused on children and adolescents. Key goals of this partnership include expanding access to assistive technologies, promoting innovation ecosystems for children, and supporting startups in the sector.

This recognition further highlights Iran’s growing role in global innovation and technology, especially in addressing the needs of vulnerable populations through inclusive digital tools.
