Iran sets framework to integrate emerging technologies into football

Iran’s Vice-Presidency for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-Based Economy, in collaboration with the Iranian Football Federation, has developed a roadmap to introduce cutting-edge technologies into football, the country’s most popular sport.

In a joint session, Vice President Hossein Afshin emphasized football’s massive cultural impact in Iran and the global community, underlining the government’s commitment to technological advancement in sports.

He noted that even the president has shown direct interest, particularly in supporting clubs through fair distribution of broadcast revenues.

Afshin pointed to existing collaborations in wrestling technology and the planned creation of an innovation center in that sport.

He also highlighted the growing capabilities of Iranian tech companies, particularly in using artificial intelligence for match analysis, digital advertising, and sports data. The next steps include expanding these applications to refereeing, coaching, and athletic training.

Mehdi Taj, President of the Iranian Football Federation, welcomed the initiative, noting that with over 5 billion viewers, the World Cup is the most-watched global event.

He stressed that technology can be a game-changer for football’s development and global competitiveness.

Both officials affirmed that innovation, especially through AI, will be central to elevating the future of Iranian football.
