Iran invests $3 million in university quantum programs

Iran’s Vice President for Science, Technology and Knowledge-Based Economy, Hossein Afshin, announced a $3 million investment this year in quantum research infrastructure at selected universities with strong capabilities.
He also said that from October, 16 quantum-related courses will be introduced across 12 universities to address the country’s shortage of skilled specialists in the field.
Speaking at the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) headpuarters ahead of National Journalists’ Day, Afshin highlighted the government’s efforts to enhance the quality of the country’s knowledge-based ecosystem, noting that innovation must be dynamic, with both new entrants and the removal of underperforming companies.
He stressed that policy must prioritize deep-rooted, sustainable technological growth over rapid expansion in the number of start-ups.
Afshin said quantum investment includes advanced laboratory infrastructure and educational initiatives aimed at accelerating scientific progress.
He added that capable human capital is the driving force behind science and technology, and universities must play a central role in developing it.
On artificial intelligence, Afshin noted that infrastructure projects are near completion, with AI platforms and a “Presidential Intelligent Assistant” already launched in collaboration with knowledge-based companies from 12 universities.
