Iranian herbal remedy offers hope for alzheimer’s treatment

An Iranian knowledge-based company has successfully revived the medicinal plant “Vaj,” a promising candidate for Alzheimer’s treatment and a driver of rural economic development.

According to the Center for Communications and Information of the Vice Presidency for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-Based Economy, Exir Hirkanian Mahan, specializes in cultivating and processing Vaj and its oil extract, branded as “Exir Vaj.”

Previously thought extinct in Iran, this plant holds significant value in traditional medicine.

Following nearly half a century since the last recorded sighting of Vaj in Iran, the company has rediscovered the plant and undertaken its domestication and cultivation.

After a decade of research, they have successfully developed the technology for cultivating this endangered native species.

The CEO of Exir Hirkanian Mahan highlighted Vaj’s potential uses, stating, “Traditionally, Vaj has been utilized for gastrointestinal, kidney, and liver disorders. Recent studies also suggest its potential as a treatment for Alzheimer’s. Additionally, the plant is valued in the fragrance industry.”

The company has established the first 5-hectare Vaj farm, with a dual mission of reviving this plant and creating employment opportunities through its cultivation expansion.

This initiative could position Iran at the forefront of combining traditional knowledge with modern medical advancements.
