Cognitive sciences added to BRICS research priorities

Cognitive sciences and neuroscience have been added to the list of priority research areas for BRICS member countries, following a proposal by Iran, according to Attaollah Pourabbasi, secretary of Iran’s Headquarters for the Development of Cognitive Science and Technologies.
Speaking at the seventh meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Research Infrastructures and Scientific Mega-Projects in Tehran, Pourabbasi said the new priority will take effect from next year.
The meeting was held as part of broader scientific cooperation between Iran and BRICS members, with the participation of research institutions and technology development bodies.
Pourabbasi highlighted Iran’s existing scientific capacities, noting that the country has valuable large-scale research infrastructure, including national laboratories and research centers, particularly in emerging technologies.
He said Iran is actively developing advanced research and laboratory infrastructure in the fields of cognitive sciences and neuroscience under structured national plans.
He outlined the activities and future programs of the cognitive sciences development headquarters and called for expanded and strengthened joint research collaboration between Iran and other BRICS countries in these specialized fields.
During the meeting, representatives from scientific, academic and research institutions active in neuroscience and cognitive sciences, including the National Brain Mapping Laboratory and the Institute for Cognitive Science Studies, presented reports on their activities and answered questions from participants.
Members of the working group also visited the National Brain Mapping Laboratory to review its facilities and ongoing research projects.
