Air pollutants become valuable

Behrouz Salimi-Bani, chairman of the management board at Shahrekord Carbon Dioxide Company, says a product has been developed by the company that helps to transform poisonous types of gas into something useful.

“All giant industries such as power plants, petrochemical factories, and refineries, which use fossil fuel, emit a large amount of carbon dioxide into the earth’s atmosphere. This process wastes a lot of beneficial wealth besides leading to environmental repercussions,” he said.
“With the emission of 670 million tons of carbon dioxide, our country has the world’s eight spot. We are set to change the trend by indigenizing technology,” Salimi-Bani added.
Through carbon capture technology, Shahrekord Carbon Dioxide Company has managed to turn poisonous and dangerous types of gas, which are counted as environment pollutants, into valuable and purchasable products.
The technology involves the separation and storage of carbon dioxide from a mixture of gasses, which are emitted into the atmosphere during the production process at different factories and power plants.
Carbon capture can help separate up to 90 percent of the carbon dioxide from the fossil fuel used in factories, power plants, and other industrial units, and prevent the pollutant from ascending into the atmosphere.
As part of a project in the Kermanshah petrochemical factory in western Iran, the company managed to restore 132 tons of carbon dioxide on a daily basis by installing the equipment required for carbon capture at the facility.
The restored gas undergoes an industrial process and is then supplied to industrial units for use.
