Iranian scientific vice president’s presence at G77 summit in Cuba gets vast media coverage

The participation of the Iranian vice president for science, technology and knowledge-based economy at the G77 summit in the Cuban capital, Havana, and his talks with Cuba’s president earlier this month received wide media coverage in the country.

After the meeting between Ruhollah Dehghani Firouzabadi and his entourage with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on September 14, the Latin American country’s state news agency Prensa Latina reported, “The Cuban president stressed on the determination and potentials of the two countries in continuing to step up bilateral ties, and said the participation of an Iranian official in the Group of 77 Summit in Cuba indicates the desired political, economic and commercial relations between the two countries.”

Meanwhile, Cuban newspaper Juventud Rebelde wrote, “During the meeting with Dr. Ruhollah Dehghani Firouzabadi, the Cuban president stated that his stay in Havana will bolster historical ties, friendship and cooperation between the two nations.”

“Diaz-Canel thanked Iran for its persistent support and its international call for an end to the six-decade economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, and declared Cuba’s opposition to the imposition of unilateral embargoes on and attempts to disrupt stability in Iran,” the daily added.

Venezuela’s Diario VEA newspaper also focused on Dehghani’s speech at the G77 summit, writing, “Ruhollah Dehghani Firouzabadi said that there are common challenges in the global south for which science, technology and innovation provide transformative solutions.”

Al-Mayadeen Español, Cubadebate news website, Radio Bayamo, Radio Sancti Spiritus, Radio Reloj National, Granma, Diario national newspaper, the official newspaper of the Communist Party of Cuba, Granma, and the Cuban news agency CAN were among the media that reported the meeting between Diaz-Canel and Dehghani.
