Iranian company builds multipurpose gamma radiation device that aids food, health industries

An Iranian knowledge-based company has built a multipurpose gamma radiation device that both elongates the length of time foodstuffs can be kept in storage and help sterilize medical equipment.

Sharpartow Iranian Co. has used sponsorship by the Iranian Vice Presidency for Science and Technology to manufacture the device, which the two Iranian ministries of Agriculture as well as Health and Medical Sciences can use for different purposes.

The device can be used in the food industry to decrease the microbial volume of such foodstuffs as dried vegetables, spices, potatoes, onions, and garlic.

The health sector can benefit from the device by using it to sterilize medical equipment such as bandages, gauze, and blood transfusion pipes, as well as in allograft and implant surgeries.

Sharpartow Iranian Co. says its device uses Cobalt-60 (60Co) technology to provide high sterilization and does not affect the quality of the item it is used on, and can thus be a better alternative to methods that use bromomethane, ethylene oxide, etc.

The use of the device, and gamma radiation more broadly, can decrease fatalities caused by hospital infections and increase medical security, and can prevent gastronomical diseases by sterilizing certain foodstuffs.
