Iran produces first locally-made medical-grade polyurethane foam

In a major step toward self-sufficiency in medical technology, an Iranian knowledge-based company has successfully developed the country’s first polyurethane foam specifically designed for wound exudate management.

According to the Iranian Vice Presidency for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-Based Economy, the company’s CEO emphasized that this innovation marks a significant milestone in reducing dependence on imports and strengthening Iran’s medical equipment industry. Leveraging cutting-edge technical knowledge and localized technology, Iranian experts have created a high-quality, internationally competitive product.

Previously, healthcare centers in Iran were heavily reliant on imported wound care foams, leading to high treatment costs and limited access, especially for patients with chronic or complex wounds.

The domestic production of this essential medical material is expected to significantly cut costs and improve availability nationwide.

The company has also made notable progress in exporting its products to countries such as Iraq, Oman, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Russia. With growing international interest, it aims to expand further into Southeast Asia and Africa.

Highlighting the importance of education and training for healthcare professionals, the CEO said the company is prepared to host specialized workshops on advanced wound care using the new foam, aiming to improve treatment outcomes and overall patient care across the country.
