Iran ranks fourth in knowledge production in medicinal plants and traditional medicine

Iran stands fourth among the countries in the world in terms of producing knowledge in the field of medicinal plants and traditional medicine, the secretary of the Headquarters of Science and Technology Development of Medicinal Plants and Traditional Medicine affiliated with the Iranian vice president’s office said.

Noting that Iran has a rich background of using herbal medicines that dates back to several thousand years, Mohammad Reza Shams Ardakani said Iran’s scientific growth in the field expedited since the establishment of the Faculty of Traditional Medicine in 2007.

Ardakani also said knowledge-based firms in Iran have had a major role in developing the science of production, processing and extraction of medicinal plants.

The Iranian vice president’s office for science, technology and knowledge-based economy has incrementally supported the knowledge-based companies due to their status and major contributions in recent years, he said.  

He pointed out that people in recent years have shown more inclination to return to nature. 

The official added traditional Iranian medicine is health-oriented and explained, “Many teachings of traditional Iranian medicine are based on modification of lifestyle, and due to the fact that these teachings are rooted in people’s culture, they are easily accepted and people can easily access its services.”
