Iran develops new thermal insulation products

Iranian researchers have successfully developed thermal insulation products based on advanced material.

Besides being fireproof, the heat insulation products can be used in the exterior of buildings as a layer to help save energy and revise the pattern of energy consumption.

The coatings, produced by the knowledge-based Atlas Protective Coatings company, can be widely used in structures such as bridges, tunnels, and reinforcing bars in concrete, which include elements made of steel.

The heat insulation products prevent energy loss in two ways: through the pigments resistive to heat, with a low rate of heat transfer, and nanomaterials that trap air within them and lower the rate of heat transfer.

Since air particles are trapped, a thermal coating with low thickness can also have an acceptable performance. Because the coating is water-based, it can be used more easily compared to solvent-based coatings. The new products also cause less damage to the environment compared to usual coatings such as fiberglass and polystyrene.

Besides on metals, the coatings easily stick to other surfaces such as concrete, wood, plaster, and cement. In addition, they are waterproof and are resistive to rain and damp and can thus be used in the exterior of buildings.

The newly-developed coatings can easily be washed with water and soap and does not allow the growth of fungi and bacteria. They can also come in colorless, transparent models in harmony with the surface beneath.
Most coatings in the market have applications in industry, but the new model is used in buildings and their exterior. The costs are also reasonable.
