Iran makes device for quick diagnosis of anemia with one drop of blood

A knowledge-based company in Iran has designed and manufactured a device that can diagnose anemia, or hemoglobin deficiency, in patients in a matter of a few seconds by analyzing no more than one drop of blood.

Breaking free from the traditional blood tests, the device can diagnose the condition and analyze the data on the spot and transfer it to a computer, according to Fatemeh Haji Mohammad Hosseini, the chief executive officer of the Shenacell Company that made the device.

She said the laboratory equipment was made by a team of graduates from Iranian universities after extensive studies and blood tests based on bio-microfluidics.

Hosseini added in case it is diagnosed in the early stages, the gadget can help prevent many complications resulting from anemia, including restless leg syndrome, depressive symptoms, sleep disorders and anxiety.

She also warned, considering the effects of iron on the development of nervous system and the brain, anemia can negatively affect fetuses as well.

Citing a 2018 study, Haj Hosseini said 12 to 47 percent of the elderly suffer from anemia and warned, if left untreated, the condition can lead to long-term hospitalization and even death.
